Being on the South Coast, Bournemouth was part of Britain's front line during the Second World War and suffered many bombing raids - the most famous being the destruction of the lavish Metropole Hotel. The town also acted as a key centre for the D Day landings.
Today it is a thriving and exciting university town with more than 160,000 residents.
